This is a case where the Democrats have come to believe their own propaganda. I would be willing to bet that most Democrats who are anti-war today were pro-war until no wmd's were located. At that point, the Democratic Party leaders seized upon a way to blame the Republicans for what, up until then, had been a very good idea. After all, if Saddam did have a nascent nuclear program as had been reported by numerous intelligence agencies for at least ten years - and we know now that Saddam purposely drove the reporting that he did have wmd's (FBI George Piro interrogations of Saddam) - what are the odds that a truly growing and international terror organization like Al-Qaida might gain access to them? Mostly, it was just Obama who was willing to take the risk and to believe whatever Saddam might publicly say on the matter, but then Obama was then a lowly State Senator with neither the access to know what he was talking about nor the accountability for the price of his ignorance. In short, Bush would have been a fool not to take the intelligence reports seriously in the aftermath of 9/11. Clearly, there was debate on the matter. The intelligence was more broad than it was deep, but how long does one fool around waiting for a nuke when reports suggest one is in the works? Obama was prepared to wait forever, but no President could do that under the circumstances. Politically, I am sorry that the intel was dead wrong and Bush did not find the wmd's, but, personally, I am relieved that we know for certain that Saddam, Iraq and Al-Qaida are not the potential threat they were seen to be five years ago. I am also pleased that, after much Al-Qaida provoked sectarian fighting, Iraq is finally coming together again as a nation and I truly hope their fledgling efforts at Democracy and mutual cooperation take hold. Time will tell.
